Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1895. THE TOWN HALL.

Burn sides of the Town Hall question have been fairly put before the public, and fairly fought out, with the exception of one foul shot which came at the last hour in the names of Messrs Feist, Pniguell, and Chamberlain. Yesterday's poll was accepted as a decisive test of public opinion, and the result was a surprise to many, not only in the magnitude of the poll, but also in its preponderance in favour of immediately proceeding with the erection ot a Hall. The result practically was, for the Hall, 93!) votes, against it, 599. The majority was greater than we anticipated, because there were many who, though they were favourable lo the Hall project, could not find it in their hearts to voto against old settlers like Messrs Feist and Chamberlain. There can be no victory without a regret, and our own satisfaction with the result of the poll, and that of many others is marred by the thought that Mr Feist's honest conviction against the Town Hall has for a time excluded hi in from a Trust where he has given long, honorable, and useful seryice, Had general fitness for the office of a trustee decided the issue Mr b'cist must hayo been elected, but the testing point was the hall itself and on this he was not in touch with public opinion. No doubttho Trus* tees will now feel it their duty to givo elfoct to the verdict of the poll, and in doing so we hope they will set about their task in a cautious and prudent spirit. Progress occasionally demands a little borrowing and we have come to the conclusion fchatj in this instance—provided it bo not of a reckless character—it will be to the advantage of the town.
