In Hie Assembly Sir Henry Pnrkes made another strong appeal on behalf of Federation, contending that it would be criminal to upset the tariff unless tlie new duties were meant to last, lie reckoned that Federation would be absolutely hopeless for twenty-one years if Mr Reid's proposals were adopted. He would fight for freetradeas the policy best suited toiFedcration, but if Protection was adopted he would accept it. Mr llcid in replying, said that no Colony in Australia would be found neglecting social legislation and reform for Federation alone, and only by tariff reform could they obtain direct taxation.
