Seceiiied, May 29,10.4S a.m. Sydnst, May 28. Following upon the failure of the recent conference to adjust the question of the border railway rates, the tariff war is being resumed between N.S. Wales and Victoria with greater activity than ever, Both are now quoting murderously low rates to secure the Riveriun, trade.
An agreement has been arrived at for the amalgamation of tho forces of the Labor Electoral League and the Labor Federation of Australia, by which overlapping interests in parliamentary contests shall be prevented. The new body will be known as the Political Labour League, The candidates will bo chosen by ballot. The new rules provide that until the party obtains a majority in the House and cm form an administration of its own, no labour momber shall take office as a Minister. The platform has been generally broadened so ub to include anyone subscribing to its tenets, whether a member of a labor organisation or not. Tho Parliamentary party on questions affecting labour or the fate of the Government shall vote solid, and that a caucus majority decides,hasbeenre-affirmßd, Memiodrnk, May 28. The Premier's suggestion that tho Agents-General should be urged to press on the Pacific Cable Question ib distinctly opposed by Tasmania and Western Australia, which require further time before committing their colonies. New Zealand prefers to wait for MrWaid'sreturn. Queensland has answered favourably, but New South Wales and South Australia have not replied. It is bolioved the latter isunlikely to support the proposal.
