WAIRARAPA HUNT CLUB SPORTS.
The annual sports, adjourned from the 16th, were held on the Carterton Show Grounds yesterday, and being a public holiday and a line day, were well patronised, Over 1000 people were on the gionnd, from all parts of the Wairarapa. The grandstand was chiefly occupied by ladies and children. The local Brass Band played selections at intervals There were two or three spills, but no ono was hurt, on the contrary those'who had the spills seemed to rather enjoy it, and certainly it added to the interest of the programme. Theoliicers carried out their light duties in a pleasant manner, the bulk of the work falling on tho Secretary, Mr W. McKenzie, who got through it all as a matter of course. Mr Buckeridgo had a' publican's booth, and Mr A. L. Whyte dispensed refreshments, both doing a fair trade. Tho following are the results:-' 1. Dismounting Hurdle Competition (bare-backed). Compotitors to jump several flights hurdles, dismounting (both feet to touch tho ground) aud remounting betwee.i each flight. First prize £2, 2ud special prize, F. Dixon i L Proctor 2 Time 22 sees.
_ 2. Orange Competition—Competitors to ride over hurdlee to be decided by the judge], carrying a plate of oranges, the one retaining tho most oranges to bo winner. First prizo £2,2 nd £l. i L. Proctor f F. Sexton f Tie. Slakes divided. Time 18sccs. 3. Ladies' Trophy, Needle Threading Com-pstition---Horses to be nominated by ladiesCompetitors to jump hurdles, dismount' lead horse to lady to thread needle, tie knot in cotton, hand same to competitor, who then remounts, jumps hurdles, and proceeds to winning post. Open only to mombers of recognised Hunt Clubs, Ist gold bracelet value £5, 2nd brooch, 3rd tennis racket.
Miss Ussher's Welcome Charlie 1 Mrs Harold Welch's Koniui ... 2 Miss Buclteridgo's Azalea ... 3 Koniui and Azalea tied androdeitoff, resulting as above. Time, lmin 36sce, 4. Gretna Green Race-Competitors to Btnrt with two hoives [or ponies], ridin« one and Wing the other with saddle on° etc. Gallop over hurdle to a tent 150 vards 02, where members dressed as ladies are assembled. Each couipetitpr to assist his lady to mount, then mount his own horse the pair to gallop back over hurdle to starting post, dismount and sign their names legibly. Demount and gallop over hurdle and around post and back again over hurdle to tho winning post. Ist prizo £4,2 nd £2, 0 •
