The site proposed for the Public Hall is at the back of the Courthouse, and next the County Council Chambers and Library, After somo argument as to the area needed, the Minister decided to allow n, frontage of 78 feet for the purpose. Subsequently a deputation counting of Messrs Bish, Adam Armstrong, Fairbrother, McEweu, Proctor and several others, waited on the Minister and urged that several reforms should be effected „ of an educational character. The Minister acknowledged that an amendment of the present system was desirable, and suggested, if the Cabinet did not see its way to take the matter up, that an jimonding Education Bill should bo introduced by a private member. ' He agreA with tho deputation that. Inspectoral should be placed under the Central Department, and periodically transferred, and that the class books should be made mora uniform than at present. He had reduced the schedule of books for use in schools from 113 to about 40, and he hoped shortly to see a series of books applicable to the Colony, issued by the Government printer, the use of which would be mado imperative by statute. With reference to the action of Boards in appointing teachers without consulting the Committee, he thought any abuse could be corrected by the Committees electing members to tho Board who would carry out their wishes. The visitors were entertained at a substantial and nckrcM luncheon, served up in Host Tucker's style at the Marquis of Normanby, and the rcnmiulcr of the afternoon v.ssdevoted to a drive around tho Jrskirts, during which the school ifflj Dalelield cheese factory were visited; the Ministerial party taking their departure fiom Dalelield by the down train.
