CARTERTON v. STARS.
This match was played on Saturday and ended in a victory for Carterton by one try to nil. The Stars played with several substitutes, and on account of the poor display of the Carterton team at Mnsterloii on the previous Saturday, did not take much trouble in getting the best team away. Precisely the same thing happened last year, and it was thought the Stars had been taught a
lesson. As It was Carterton placed an excellent team in tlio liold, uiul liJitl the best of the game. The home fonvard team whs fur too heavy for the visitors, and it was only the excellent back play of the Stars that saved heavier scoring. Carterton played with a strong wind in their favour in the first spell, but failed to score, although the Stars were very severely pressed on several occasions. The hack play of the Slavs was almost yierfed, mid although playing on the defensive, their full back only had occasion to handle the ball once during (lie spell, This speaks volumes for the lino play of the three-quarters. In the second spell, it was thought the Stars would score, but the homo team made it a forward game, and overran their smaller opponents. From a loouo rush, Bridge scored the only try, which was not converted. Allen, Booth, Bridge, and Moore played well for the winners, and Boss, Tyke, and the two Wrigleys were about the best of the Stars, Mr W. Thomas acted as referee, NOTES. There will be no championship matches next, Saturday, as most of the teams will have their " lill" on (Queen's Birthday. I The fixtures of the Thursday Union have been drawn,to commence on May iJOth, when the White Stars meet Featherston at Carterton, and Oriental 2nd play Parkville at Masterton.
The Star second kicked off, scored, and claimed their match against the Masterton second, the lattei not rolling up to time on Saturday last, Tho following letter has been handed to me:—" To Damocles."— " On behalf of the Oriental Football Club I beg to take exception to your statement in Friday's Times that the trial matches had mot been played on the true merits of the team. No such motion was passed at the meeting, (lie only reason given by the delegates being " that the Oriental Club was considered too strong." In justice to our Club I hopo you will find space for this in your column, I am, etc., A. C. Nicoi, Delegate O.Jf'.C:" 1 gladly accept the correction, as I intended t« refer rather harshly in reference to the motion as it reached me, As it is, I consider the Orientals haye good reasons to complain of theii treatment at tho hands of the delegates, in debarring them from entering for the Union contests. In the three trial matches played,-the) won two and lost one, showiiif noundu*- BU l )e ™ rit y in oitll ° l ' vic tory.
