By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent. tPAHiATOA, Wednesday. If Eli Smith has been appointed li Mr Tono in connection with the re-valuation of land at Mnknri. The Bishop of Wellington and Mrs Wallis were entertained at n social in tho Public Hall last evening. Tho Hall was crowded with . mombers of all denominations. Mr G. H. Smith, representative of the Diocese, received His Lordship, and Mr Vile (Mayor) on behalf of tho y residents, oxtonded a wolcomoto His Lordship, who in replying thanked the people for their kind-hearted Tvolcomo, Ho exhorted the parishioners to take a deeper interest in Church matters, and bo dealt at length on the question of religious : education. He characterised the N.Z. Church government as better than tho English, a fact duo to i.. laymen having extended powers, nnd ho advocated a parishioners roll in Churches, and expressed that tho progress made place, would be extended to Church mattors. During ■< the evening, Mrs Wallis was presented with a bouquet by the little girls, and addresses were delivered by Roys. Eccles and Davy (Anglican), Griffin (Methodist), Philip (Presbyterian). Father McKeuua, who is absent from the District, forwarded an apology for nonattendance. A musical programme V was gone through, and a pleasant evening spent. The Bishop leaves for Ekotahuna this morning
