A STRANGE CONFESSION.
A MURDER OF MANY YEARS AGO. By Telegraph.—JPms Jsswiation. Auckland, Monday. Last night a man named Samuel Evison, a carpenter, gave himself up to Constable Forbes, of Hamilton, and confessed to having caused the death by drowning of a woman whom bo pushed into the river at Nottingham, in March, lb'!;! The constable got his statement taken before a Justice of the Peace. Evison appeared quite sane. He slated that he knew the woman only by the name of Jenny, and was acquainted with her only three weeks. She was employed in the lace trade, and be states that she was 20years of age, of dark complexion, with hazel eyes, At the time of the occurrence, ho was employed by Bell and Sons, contractors and builders, Sherwood street, and boarded with another carpenter in Waterway Street, Nottingham. Evison slates that his sister and mother reside iu Retford, Nottingham. Constable Forbes brings Evison to Auckland to-morrow, Uii;i{. . Samuel Evison, self-accused of murdering a woman at Nottingham, left England in 18S2, and lias resided for some years in the neighbourhood of Hamilton; be was well-respected, but was very reserved. He was charged at the Police Court, Hamilton, on his own confession, and remanded for eight days. He will be biought up at Auckland on Tuesday next. Inspector Hicksou bus communicated with the Commissioner of Police at Wellington, it is presumed with the view of cabling to the Scotland Yard authorities in London makiug further investigations.
