WAIRARAPA AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL SOCIETY.

Tho following is the report of the Committee for the year ended 31st March, to be presented to the Annual Meeting of Members, to bo held in the Society's Rooms, Carterton, on May I lth:-

Your Committee have much pleasure in presenting the Report and Balance Sheet, for the year, which shows good and substantial progress.

The entries for the November Show were 1172, as against 1044 in 1893; 1013 in 1892; 897 in 1891; 711 in 1890; and 515 in. 1889. These figures furnish the strongest proof possible, that the efforts of successive Committees have been substantiallyrccogniscdand seconded by the settlers throughout tho district, and must act as a valuable stimulus to further exertion by succeeding Committees, It is gratifying also to note that the live stock exhibits wero turned out ill capital condition on tho whole, despite the exceptional severity of the previous wintor, Expenditure on new sheep pens, loose-boxes and other improvements of a permanent character, amounting (o about £SO, and law expenses for conveyance of land, have prevented any largo reduction in tho amount of tho Society's debt, but it is pleasing to note that steady progress is being made in the right direction.

On the ground of past good work in raising the character of the live stock, which admittedly forms the basis of two-thirds of our exports, and of tho pressing necessity to do still more in order to minimiso the effect of the general fall in prices, the Committee appeals with confidence to settlers and the public generally for continued support, New members, numbering 36, have joined the Society during the year, making a total of JJ64 subscribers, as against 110 in 1888. Further efforts should be made to enrol all settlors who have not as yofc become members.

The Conference of delegates from all tho principal Societies of the the Colony ivhich met in Wellington last year discussed many subjects of groat importance to settlers, and the result mis considered so successful that it was unanimously resolved to hold a further Conference at Dunedin in 1896. Tho establishment of a Colonial Flock Book for both Islands was one of the valuable results which might be expected : from such meeting between practical men. ■ The balance sheet shows net receipts £836 and expenditure £B2-1.
