FOOTBALL NOTES.
[By Damocles.! Although tho Masterton Club-had the choice of grounds for last Saturday, and had the Park Oval at their disposal, the muster of players was exceedingly disappointing, only five or six senior men turning out.' As a result tho practice was of little use, tho apathy of members of the Senior Club is very discouraging to their ncwly-made skipper, and the few who do turn out when called upon. For Saturday next a team has been choseu to meet Carterton in a friendly match on the Te Ore Ore ground, and I hope to be able to report a better result. Tho Red. Stars musterod in great force on the Te Ore Ore ground, on Saturday, about forty members taking part in a first-class game. Teams were chosen by the captain and vicecaptain, and excellent and even spells were played. The Palace Car travelled to and fro, and numbers of people went out to see the
practice. Quite a number of now
men were initiated, and it will take some time boforo the selectors of the
teams will be able to pick the best men to represent their Club. Although several of last year's playern have retired, it is expected that fairly strong teams will take the field again this season. The Orientals had a very successful practice on the Lincoln Road Ground on Saturday. A match between the White Stars and Orientals will be played on Thursday next. • Tho following team of the Bed Star Club will play the remaining members on the Park Oval on Saturday next .:—Backs-Wrigley, Jackson, Renal], D'Arcy, W. Thompson, Hudson'; wings, T. Wrigley, Morris; forwards, McKillop, Homeni, Jeffries, Stone, Doughty, Wellington, Cochrane. ) .On the occasion ot a football [ match, not so very long ago, between t a city team and a country team, the i latter had prepared a splendid lunch I for tbo visitors just before it was , proposed to start the game. Both 1 teams did thorough justice to tbegood liquor and luxuries provided, the , city men especially going in strong for champagne and cigars, so much so, indeed,- that the country players t anticipated an easy victory. On looking towards the football ground however, after lunch, the country men espied a remarkably freshlooking lot of giants kicking the ball about, and, in amazement, asked the guests who the strangers were. " Oh," replied one of them, finishing a glass of champagne, "That's our playing team; we aro only the lunching team, you know." The country men were defeated. A Thursday team is being formed by Mr Hansen, of the Red Stars, to meet To White at Gladstone on Thursday week. The following team will play for Masterton against Carterton, on the Hospital ground on Saturday next; Thompson, McGoyern, 1, Johnston! Broad, H, Perry, Sullivan, g' [Johnstone, Holyoake, Emmetfc, |Mowlem, Fowler, Gray, Anketell, Gillies, W. Johnstone. Emergencies: Leech, J, Brown, Jumbo, Afootball match has been arranged for May 24th, between the Masterton 2nd and Ist team of the Wellington Orientals. B. 3 M,D, Whatman has been elected one of the Vice-Presidents of the N.Zi. Rugby Union.
