The Committee of Hnquiry, appointed by the Florae Office, con-1 demns the present prison system, and advises sweeping changes especially in the direction of showing greater leniency to prisoners. The Committee admits there lias been a great, increase in the recidiviste class.
The Queensland loan is quoted at 3| to 3f premium. Earl Kintorc, late Governor of of South Australia, lias . been appointed commander of tiie third battalion of the Gordon Highlanders.
