THE CHITRAL CAMPAIGN.
Calcutta, April 25.
The siege of Chitral began on March 4t h, and ended on April 19th. The garrison had to subsist on very inferior food. The enemy's (-ranches were constructed up to within forty yards of the gate of tho fort.
The beseigcrs set (ire to the gun tower and also endeavoured to burn down (lie water tower, but in each case the flames were extinguished before they obtained a firm hold. Several sorties were niado and in one of these the beseiged recaptured the summer house and exploded the
enemy's mine. The enemy lost-sixty men, thirtylive being buyonotted, while Dr. Robertson had 21 men killed and 28 wounded.
After this reverse Slier Afzul and Umra Khun retired to Broz, | lower down tho Valley, and a mim-1 her of followers iled. Heavy losses occurred through the wonderful shooting from the trenches around the fort when the party was besieged with Amir U1 Mulk. Dr Robertson arrested the latter for conspiring with Umra Khan to attack the British.
