According to a Yokohama correspondent, the Japanese infantry is supplied with shirts and drawers of paper—not tissue paper, buta strong yellowish paper of such tenacity as to hear making button-holes in it the same as linen. The various parts of the garments are partly stuck together and partly sewn by machine or hand, and provided with porcelain buttons. The Japanese soldiers wear these paper parts quite willingly, and the cheapness of the material counts for much. There is a saving' also in another direction, for no washing is needed, the worn underclothes being replaced by new onus as circumstances may permit. The correspondent facetiously suggests that sonic portions of the old ones might even be utilised as handkerchiefs.
