THEATRE ROYAL
THE GONDOLIERS,
After a longer spell oven than Usual, since Masterton was visited by a company worth going to see, the Theatre Royal was opened last evening by the Pollard Opera Company, in the quaint and pretty Gilbertian comic opera " The Gondoliers." The house was well-filled in every part, the audience being very enthusiastic. In tho opinion of many, this clevor company is even better and stronger than when last in Masterton, and certainly "The Gondoliers" was staged equally as well as on the last occasion the Pollards visited us. The piece
is generally admitted to be one of the in the company's eitensiye and they play it well. Efficiently trained, both principals and chorus worked thoroughly together, with the result that the audience and performers were soon in accord, and hearty applause ihowed the approval of the efforts of the juveniles. Miss Marion Mitchell scored a great success as Marco Pahnieri, and her song "Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes," was imperatively encored. Miss Maud Beatly as Guiseppe, was quite as successful; Miss Cissy Sandford as Casilda, singing sweetly, and with artistic tasto, Gianetta and Tessa were taken by Misses May Beatty and Lily Stephens, the singing and acting of both being particularly good. clever rendering of tho humors of their cast, A special feature in the piece was the perfect daucing of the children, a clear evidence of the training they have received. The scenery was well arranged and the dresses very rich and tasteful, the production altogether being a treat worth waiting for, To-night Uncle Tom's Cabin will he produced and to-morrow eyening a sacred concert,
