FOOTBALL.

[llY DAMOCLES.] The football season in Masterton will be formally opened by the Rod Star Club on Saturday next, when all members and intending members are expected to he present. A Ladies' Football Club has been formed in London, and the apdH priate name of the CaptainessTs Miss Nellie Honeyball. Tho club has a membership of thirty maidens between the ages of seventeen and twenty-five, and they are said to play the Itugby rules to perfection. The heavy woight of the team, is a damsel of eleven stone, The Sydneyfootballersarefarfrom satisfied with the result of the New South Wales tour through New Zealand last season, and reckon that something must have been far wrong, when the reps, beat the best team New Zealand could produce, and then lost provincial fixtures. An effort is to bo made, this season, to 6end another team across to Maoriland, including the University men, who will have a big try to make a better stand to lower the records of some of the conquerors of last season. At a meeting of the Red Star Club, held on Saturday evening, Mr T, Wrigley was elected vice-Captain, vice Mr J. Bmmett, resigned. Mr F. J. Butement was unanimously re-elected Secretary, and Mr A. Norton will occupy the Treasurer. Another meeting will V held next Saturday night, when sow important business, in reference to the ground, will bo transacted, I have received a letter from a correspondent signing himself" Stick to your colors, 1 speaking in yery harsh terms anent the action of players who become turncoat at the least excuse, and join a rival Club Although I agree with a lot in my correspondent's letter, no good could come from its publication, especially as the players mentioned, may reconsider their determination before the season commences. The popular ex-captain of the Masterton Club, Mr A. E. D'Arcy, who has just entered the band of benedicts, was visited at " Solway " on Saturday night by'about thirty members of the various Clubs, who wore anxious to extend to the newly married, couple a real footballers' welcome, The largo company was most hospitably entertained, and the health of Mr and Mrs D'Arcy, proposed by Mr A. N. Norton, was enthusiastically honored by all presont. Several songs were song, Mr Schnelle, a visitor to the'town, pjuajr I ing the accompaniments, and attejw happy speech by Mr Hansen, on behalf of the Stars, was responded to by Mr D'Arcy, a hearty ."luld Lang Syne" finished'up the programme, and the company dispersed. It is pleasing at any time to see such genuine expressions of good feeling given by young fellows, and especially so when the majority of those present on Saturday night were members of a rival Club to that of the recipient. "It may be mentioned that Mr D'Arcy was one of the first members of tho Bed Star Club, and although he has played for Masterton for a numberof years, he has always felt kindly disposed towards the members with whom his apprenticeship was served. Wellington will be well-off for football grounds in the course of a year or two. The Newtown Park will be ready this season, and the n.ewly formed Athletio Company are getting' their grounds' into proner order for the following season jfe is also understood that the MiranSfr Park Company will level off the interior of their' course 1 for athletio purposes, and football will, bo, more popular than over in the Empire City. Now that the Masterton Club : is likely to sell their Worksop Road ground, something will. have to be done here in, the matter, as it will, be decidedly necesßary.to lave more than one football ground at the disposal of Clubs during the ensuing season."'' •
