A QUESTION OF PENSIONS.
A HUGE DEFICIT. (Received March 22,10.30 a.m.) Sydney, March 22. The investigation into the Civil i Service Superannuation Fund, made by the Government statistician, shows a deficiency of £2,900,000. The fund in 1893, including the [ Government contributions, amounted ! to £560,000, while pensions already k entered upon were valued at £713,000. ' Mr Cogiau states that the condij tion is so bad that no assistance the State could reasonably bo expected to afford would be of material service, as the deficiency is increasing t at the rate of £120,000 per year. The j only remedy he could see was to re- . duce the present prospective pen- : sions bv fully sixty per cent, and limiting pensions to those who had I readied full pension age, charging retrenched civil servants to the eojjfe solidated revenue, and admitting r one above 35 years and otherwise re- , striding the condition.
