PUKETOI SETTLERS' PROGRESSIVE CLUB.
| (From Our Own Correspondent), A meeting of settlers was held on the 16th inst. at Messrs Macdonalds' residence, for the purpose of considering the question of forming a Settlors' Club or Society, with mutual and progressive objects. Despite the strong wind and the rain, there was a good attendance.
Mr Evelyn Macdonula explained that the object of the meeting was to form a Society or Club for the promotion of the welfare of settlers in a twofold way, firstly: in respect of their interests as settlers, which had been heretofore neglected, advantage being taken of their disunion; secondly: in respect of social union and contact, good and necessary always, but specially so far those pioneers of the wildernessbush settlor's—who were without those easy meansof recreation, education, and intercourse enjoyed by others. He hoped to see them overcome their special disadvantages, chiefly in the matter of access to and among each other, and further to seo the feeling spread and similar societies formed throughout the Colony. Something of this sort had become imperative. Mr McDonald was then voted to the Chair, and called upon several others to speak, who all expressed high appreciation of the movement, and agreed upon the needs of such clubs or societies among the bush settlers of the Colony. It was decided to form a club with the above title, and the necessary preliminaries were gone through quickly and well. Quite a number of resolutions wore put and earned with applause, which was animated throughout. The meetings are to be lield monthly, with a social every quarter. Steps are to be taken to build a hall as soon as possible. A debate is to take place at next meeting on bimetallism. It is hoped fch? ofob will grow to be the forerunner of many others. I may state that ladies are admitted to membership.
