BUSH FIRES AT CARTERTON.
AN ALL NIGHT BATTLE WITH THE FLAMES. (From Our Own Correspondent). The heavy gale of yesterday spread the busli fires from the hills at Matarawa, Dalefield,and Belvedere down on to the plains, devouring fencos, haystacks, and buildings in their piogress. Mr H. Judd, of Matarawa, lost two grain stacks, small cottage, and had 500 acres of grass hm,<L. burnt. The Grey town Eire Brigade savedMrA.Gallon'sstablesandother buildings, Water was very scarce. At Dnlefield, G. Waterson lost a, barnful of hay, and outbuildings j Phelps, cowshed; Tunniecliffe, haystack and fowl yards ; G. Hall, 10,000 ft timber, value £SO, Tho Belvedere School caught alight and was saved by chopping away part of the floor. Mr Hooker's tram-line, also Mr W. Booth's were destroyed for several chains, the former losing about 10,000 feet of limber, and the latter his compact stock-yards on the hill, and stacks of firewood. The house near tho planing mills was ignited and put out 6even different times. MrT. Ray's farm and outbuildings were saved with difficulty, gangs of men have been up all night, here and at Booth's mill, and only by strict attention, saved these properties.
