It is not altogether to be regretted that the annual meeting of the Mastcrton Agricultural and Pastoral Society wilted away on Saturday afternoon. It was, perhaps, injudicious to hold it in the absence of its Secretary, Mr W. Lowes, and it was just as well that some further time should bo given to the consideration of some new departure which is evidently necessary to its reinvigoration, We aro not surprised that as matters now stand, no one cared to undertake the responsibility of being president. Of course, (iuuncially the Society is sound as a bell, but "until somo now arrangement be made as to the time and place of the Annual Show, there is not much credit to be got out of it. The show requires to be recast on new lines, and we think a reconstruction committee might be appointed to do this work before holding an adjourned annual meeting. It is probable that future shows could be more advantageously held in the autumn, and a more attractive programme put before the public, than formerly. We are also disposed to believe that a show ground in the vicinity of the railway station, would he a decided advantage, The Society has reached a stage, when it should either make a bold step forward or sink into comparative insignificance. Tho forward step would undoubtedly carry with it a large measure of public support, and many who nowbold aloof from it, would feel some satisfaction in again becoming associated with its career
