CASTLEPOINT RACE.

(From Our Own Correspondent,) Custlepoiut Races woro held on Saturday on the beach iu splendid weather. The tide was favorable, and the beach therefore in excellent condition, It wasa very pretty sceno, and would have made an excellent picture for an artist. The attendance of the public was the largest since the inauguration of the meeting, and there was a large sprinkling of representatives of the Native race. There were no signs of intoxication, and Constable Col-

lerton, who was present.had no diffi-

culty in representing Her Majesty. Mr Hiley.of the Tauhercnikau Hotel,, had the publican's booth, and was. very busy. Mr Goring JohnA (Cashpoint, Station) kindly invSm many of the visitors to an excellent luncheon.

Mr Pull, of the Oastle Point accommodation house, had his hands full His house lias been full of visitors lately, and many of them stayed there until after the races.

There were seven events, tho entries for which were more numerous than on any other occasion. For the Hurdles six horses started, but all except Flagstaff baulked at the first flight, Larrikin was collided with byNelson, and his chance of winning was greatly reduced. Natatrix disappointed bis supporters, and Flagstaff came iu an easy winner, taking all tho hurdles splendidly. The Maiden Race brought eight horses to tho post, and resulted in a dingdong race between Moondyuc and Minnow, the former (a Castlepoint station horse) the winner, finished strongly. The Whakataki Cup was a good race. Frisco and Blue Jacket led for about half-way, when Sjjk mou, Gnardh'sh and Natatrix csijo to the front. Guardfish took the lead, Russell riding well, when Natatrix overtook him, with Salmon close up. On rounding tho point towards the basin Guardfish lost threo chains by running too far out, and Natatrix with Salmon close by attending took the lead, but only for a short time, when Guardfish overtook tho local mare and seemed as if it would win when Williams brought Salmon up with a rush and snatched the victory from Guardfish, the Masterton horse.

The Castle Point Stakes was an easy win for What Oh. The Consolation saw five horses before the starter, and resulted in a splendid race between Larrikin and Minnow, the other horses being outpaced from the start. The Farewell brought out eight starters, What Oh was tho the most fancied, but could not get closer than third. It was the best race of the day. Blue Jacket led until near Pull's, with Guordfiah fourth, and Salmon next, What Oh ' then took tho lead, and Guardfish and Salmon improved thoir places, Williams was seen whipping Salmons who gamely responded and took tnT lead just a few yards from home, Guardfish being a' splendid second. Seventeen started for the Saddle Race which resulted in a dead heat between Hibernia and Whalebone,

A capital race. All in a bunch at Pull's, when they gradually dwindled off. All the starts were excellent and reflected great credit on Mr .T, F. Smith, who officiated in the absence of Mr Schofield through sickness. Tho officials all of whom worked most energetically to make the meeting so successful were:— Committee-Messrs Olphert, F. and G.Johnston, McHutchon, G. Hall, Vennell, Turnbull, W. and R. HarI vey, and Mason ; Judge—Mr McHutchon ; Starter-Mr T. F. Smith; Clerk of Scales-Mr W.°Harvey; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer—Mr H. M. Whitehead.
