[ United Press Association.] (By Electric Telegraph-Copyright). CRICKET. (Received March 1,2.45 p.m.) Melbourne, March 1. At 12,80 to-day the weather was fine, but threatening. Tbe wicket was in splendid condition. George Giffen won the toss, and elected to bat, owing to the fact that the Australians will probably get the best of the wicket. The betting is 7to son the Australians. When Harry Trott and Bruce went out to bat there were over nine thonsandpeople present. As a result of about twenty minutes play, JJrace is not out with 22, and H. Trott not out with 11. With score at 27, Trott gave chance to Ford in slips, which was not accepted. As tho afternoon wore on, the attendance increased to over 13,000. Four wickets were down when time was sounded for the magnificent total of 282 runs.
Over £7OO was taken at tho gates. The following arc the scores of the men dismissed :—Bruce, 22, H. Trott 42, IredaleS, Geo. Giffen 57, Gregory, not out, 70, Darling, not out, 72 ; extras 11, Total 282.
With one or two exceptions, tho ; fielding of the Englishmen wag perfect. London, March 1. The Daily News says the Australians have the best chances of winning the final test match, as their team is stronger in batting than for the past ten years. Some of tho English team are not playing up to their Home form.
