CRICKET NOTES.

[liY DAMOCLES.] W. Frith, playing for Featherston against against Carterton Tradesmen, last week, took eight wickets for fifteen runs. Featherston won the match by 12-1 runs to 24. The Featherston fifteen, with the help of such a demon bowler, should make things merry in the remaining Association matches. The Matarawa team visit Masterton, on Thursday week, to play the return match against the Excelsiors. St. Paul's Club cricket team are arranging to play the Excelsiors in Masterton on Easter Monday. The cup match between Masterton and Matarawa was commenced on the Park Oval on Saturday, but had to be adjourned owing to the wretched weather. The elements were favorable when the match started, and Masterton were sent to the wickets. Whatman and Cotterill faced the howling of Biddel and Saywell, and each made 19 before they were disposed of, Rain now commenced to fall, making the wicket greasy, and favorable to the bowlers, and Broad, Perry and Wrigley, who followed, had the total up to 52, when an adjournment was found imperative. The match will now either be declared a draw, or will he resumed on some future date, probably at Carterton. As numerous enquiries have been made as to wlien the final test match takes place between Stoddart's cricketing eleven and the Australians we may state that the contest will start on Ist March, five days being allowed. After the final test match they go over to the "tight little island,', and having "done" Tasmania their farewell match will bo against Adelaide from 22nd to 26th March. It is considered a pity in Melbourne that the final test match clashes with the V.R.O. Autumn Meeting, for tlio Newmarket Handicap is run on Saturday, 2nd March, and the Australian Cup on tlio Tuesday following, Crowds are partisans. When in Melbourne the Vies, are in and a Sydney howler is bowling on the olf theory, the crowd, fearful that their batsmen will hit out and get caught, keep up a fusilade from the fence. "Bowl straight!" "Can't you see the wicket ?" "You're a cock-eyed bowler." "Can't hit a house if yonr'c inside it," etc., etc. But when the Sydney men are in and the Vies, are playing "off" and failing to tempt the waiy batsmen, then comes a change of lire from the ground crowd " Hit the ball!" " Lay on the wood like Bruce docs 1" " Why the devil don't you try to score 1" '•lsn't it big enough? Would you liko a pumpkin to hit at ?" etc., etc. Heavy rain pn Friday night and Saturday morning almost necessitated tho postponement of the CTickei match Canterbury v. Otago; but the weaker clearing at noon it was decided to begin at 2,30 p.m. Canterbury won the toss and went in, but Downes and Fisher dismissed the team for 46 runs, Lawrence, 18, being tlio only double-figure scorer. Otago at the call of time, had 100 for five wickets. The ganio was resumed to-day. 11l the (fficbimaMiKjiv.
