TAUERU NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent,) Friday. One of the most successful concerts ever given in the Taueru, was held on Wednesday evening. AI pleasing change from local talent was tlio appearance of the Elkins family, and all thanks are due to them for travelling from Maslcrton to assist. It was quite a revelation to Taueru folk to find that Masterton possessed such a clever family, and hopes were expressed that they might renew their kindness on some future occasion. Their contributions to the programme were:—Violin duet, " La Somiiainbula," Miss and Master Elkins; piano solo, "Harp Eolienue," Jliss F. Elkins; piano duet, "Marche Hongroise," the Misses Elkins; violin solo, " Swiss Air," Master Arthur Elkins; and two songs by Master A. Elkins. All the items were cordially received. Other items on the programme Were contributed by tlio Misses Intiess, Richardson and Moore, and Messrs Rees, Brown, A W. Vonnell and Reihana. The Taueru Orchestra opened with tlieovei , inre"Rliod?i , ick Dhu," The Hall was nicely filled, and the result will be a pleasant addition to the Hall funds. The concert was wound up with a dance lasting into the small hours, to flic music of the Orchestra. There has been much debate here over the tax on saw-mills for road repairing, and the like. One opinion openly expressed is that the fairest way of raising money would bo to license carriers, in the same way as is done in towns and boroughs, only the fee lo be higher. By carriers, of course, is meant all people travelling on the road for trade, Whether there is anything in this, I don't know, or whether it has been thought of before, but J simply give it fori what it is worth, The weather here this week has been remarkably hot—too hot for work or play, indoors or out, and a time of coolness is much desired, '
