(From Our Own Correspondent), Wednesday.

On Monday evening a special meeting of the School Committee was held to ninko the final arrangements for the school excursion on Friday. It was resolved that as many of the Committee as canconveiiiently go shall do so, and that all the children from 9 upwards shall bo in charge of the members of the Committee that go and the tenclicrs, children under this age to be in charge of parents orguardians. It is estimated that there will be over 180 from here and Kaiwaiwai, and over 600 altogether, as Carterton and the smaller schools are going. The children arc going down by a special train leaving Carterton at b' a.m. Last evening a waggon with 34 bales of wool capsized just near the station, there was no damage done to speak of. Yesterday was the hottest day tlm I wo have had this summer, and last, night was terribly close, and to make matters worse, there was plenty of smoke about. On Monday evening the bridge at Drake's Elbow, on the Rimutuka road was found to be on lire, having caught from the surrounding bush Hres. Eventually it was extinguished. Had it been burnt down it would have been very inconvenient,us there is no ford handy owing to the banks being so steep. To-morrow the tradesmen of Carterton play our local cricketers, the following leani haying been selected: Bennett, Feast (2), Frith, Hilcy, Tocker (2), Burt, Sussex, Penny and McCarty; emergencies, If. Tocker and 11. Card.
