CRICKET NOTES.
[III" DA)IOC!.KB.] l/l/airarapa v. Pahiatua. The above match was played at Pahiatua, last Saturday. A splendid pitch was prepared, and in tho opinion of mauy of tho visitors, it quite equalled the Basin Reserve. Wairarapa won the toss, and sent Pahiatua in to bat, Udy and Hawkins knocking up SO runs before being disposed of, the rest of the team making the score up to 100. Wairarapa went to the wickets, but were soon disposed of for 37 runs, 'At tho request of Whatman, Pahiatua went in again, and were all out for 47, Wairarapa making a much better [stand and totalling 71. A large crowd was on the field, and all through the visitors werowell treated, afternoon tea being provided by the ladies, and a smoke concert in the evening. The Wairarapa men reached Masterton last night, about 7 o'clock, after a very pleasant drive through tho Bush. The following are tko scores:—
The reverse in Hie fortmius of the Wairarapa teamatl'ahiatua did not surprise anyone_ in Masterton, on Saturday, who with few exceptions, expected a severe drubbing for our men, and it says very little for the stamina of our cricketers, when rank outsiders haye to be taken away to fill places in a representative team. Of course there are exceptions when chosen men cannot get away from business, but for no less than six of the original eleven to back out for obvious reasons at almost the last minute, cannot be too harshly commented upon, The South Wairarapa men were the principal offenders, all the local men rolling up, and it must have been extremely disheartening to the few true cricketers to travel and meet such a dashing team us the Bush representatives have proved themselves to be with such a weak team, Eight out of the eleyon were members of the Masterton Club, two of whom are not even picked in the Club's first eleven in local matches. It is rumoured that jealousy in the choice of the team was one of : the principal reasons and men who were asked to fill vacancies rofuscd i on the grounds that tliey were uot i mentioned in the original eleven. I : can scarcely credit this statement, as i men with such a plea for not coming to the rescue at a critical time, are i not true lovers of the sport, and i utterly lack that principle which , ought to be shown by all who wish ' success to the game in the Wairari apa. ; The Grey town cricketers leave for i Wellington to-morrow, and play their first match of four on the Basin i Reserve on Wednesday. A fairly i strong Club team has obtained the t necessary leave, and all crickoters in s Masterton wish them success, i A cricket match took placo ber tween Homowood and Langdale, on ; Saturday last. The latter winning ■ by an innings and 38 runs. The ) scores being: Langdale, Ist innings, 3 11<>; Homewood, Ist innings, 34, r 2nd, For Langdalo Mr A. For i Homewood Messrs Horner and Beui nett wore tho chief scorers, and »I Messrfj Currie and Nib the pios't leucceEeful trundtorj, ■
