THE MAIL CONTRACTS.
VICTORIA DISSATISFIED.
(Received, February 15,10.45 a.m.) Melhouknk, February 15, Tliero is strong feeliug of annoyance in the Cabinet, at the action of the Imperial Postal authorities, in extending the mail contract a further period of two years without insisting on the concessions askod for by Victoria, befog granted. The question raised is, whether it is necessary for the Victorian Government to handicap itself with a compact, from which no whatever, is derived, and why should not withdraw from the tract, and make its own arrangements for the carriago of mails. The't example of New Zealand is pointed to as a country which manages to get along without paying a mail subsidy, and it is contended that if the $26,000 odd, paid by Victoria to' the Orient and P. it 0. Companies, weie available to encourage further competition in the carriage of Australian produce, the present demand for lower ocean freights, would be speedily realised.
