CRICKET NOTES.
[BT PillOCLEs],
All Association matches fixed for i Saturday next will be postponed till the 23rd inst., on account of the Pahiatna-Wairarapa match. The Wairarapa representatives will journey through the Bush by coach on Friday, playing a full day's match ou Saturday, and returning home on Sunday. It is stated "that W, Judd and Beecheywill be unable to accompany tho Wairarapa team. They «e both among the best chosen, and eir absence will be severely felt. D'Arcy and J. Jndd will fill the vacancies, A match is now being arranged between a combined team of the Excelsior and W.F.C.A. Clubs and a scratch eleven of tho Masterton Club for to-morrow week. The Greytown team will play four matches in Wellington, viz,, United Tradesmen, Midland, Rivals, nnd Phmmx, on four successive days. They have a cricket grouud at Mount Lyell (Tasmania), whore tho pitch is on the side of a hill. No fieldsmen are required on that side of the ground, as the ball naturally gravitates back to the centre, while fielding on tho lower side is little less severe than putting in a shift at a mine, Jho insobriety of otic of tlie English team is said to have called forth Stoddart's threat to oust the offender from tho team, undor the behaviour clause in the agreement, unless he steadies himself, Tho four test matches have all Jieen sensational, but the greatest wsations have been the performances of young Albert Trott in the Alast two. In the third test match, "he scored 38 and 72, not out in both innings, and 85 not out in the last match. Albert is only 22, and was considered too young and inexperienced to be included in the first teams. Ulackbam, the renowned wicketkeeper, has probably played his last great game. Age cannot be denied, and the father of Australian cricket, after his brilliant 20 years, will retire in favor of younger men, who having learned the art from him, have tho vigor of youth to onforce their claims. Jarvis has certainly proved himself in the late matches to be more adroit than Blackham is now. Callaway, of New South Wales, is one of the best tempered cricketers alive, and is, therefore one of tho most popular among cricketers themselves. He plays the game with Jhgarnest fun; if a fieldman drops off him, he will laugh at the blunder, and bowl away once moro as merrily as ever. Turner, on tho contrary, shoots a glance at a delinquent fieldsman which causes the blunderer to prav for tho earth to yawn and take him.
The Emperor of Austria is causing dwellings tobecicctcd forlo, oooworkers in Vienna, Three rooms will he provided for each, and the rent, which is jixed at £4 per annum, will be devoted to founding similar establishwuts.
