We have cheap bread now in Masterton, and the low prices of stock ought togiveusclicap meat. The local butchers should take into consideration the ruling rates for cattle and sheep, and give the public the benefit of the reductions in wholesale prices. Host mutton now costs about i;d per lb wholesale, and soils for as high as 4sd per lb retail. Beef costs a trille over M per lb wholesale, and is vended as high as 5d per lb for prime joints. Butchers have, of course, heavy expeuscs, and are entitled to remunerative rates, but witli the existing depression it is very desirable that the cost of living should be kept down, and in the prices now charged for meat there is evidently a margin for reduction.
