Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1895. AN EMPLOYERS' ASSOCIATION.

Tiiniiß is a feeling in this town, that the time has arrived when a local Employers' Association might be useful. In many instances, there is really little need for such an organisation, because employers and employes are on snob cordial terms, that nothing but "good times" is to be desired, in order that both may be happy. But in some cases, it is said that there is a pressure, on the part of employes, to secure concessions which employers are unable to afford, and for this reason, it is thought that there should be some little organisation on the part of the latler, Is not Mr Reeves, 100, coming up in the cause of labour, and will be not have a brilliant reception from employes here, who are grateful to him for granting them a statutory half-holiday, and for promising to make that half-holiday ut Saturday. Mr Reeves' legislation lias interfered with the business arrangements of employers in this anc! other neighborhoods, and, to a certain'extent, lias caused them to be less able than formerly, to pay wages,, ,It is nothing to Mr Reeves, if the employers of labour go stone broke; «• evbn" have to reduce wages or discharge bands. As long as he can make himself popular with the employes, who outvote the employers throughout the country, bo is happy and contented. Employers of labour look forward to facing a lwrd winter, for the prices of produce are, at the present time, very unfavourable to those engaged in buying and selling. Mr Reeves may come up hero, a) ;cl paint a pretty picture, but we fear visit will not make oats go up a penny a bushel, or in any way tend to improve the conditions and prospects flf 'ho trade of the town, He is an able speaker, and may carry with him the applause of a large meeting; but there are certain sober facts, at the present time, which are more telling and convincing.than all the rhetoric in the world, and'these all point to a time coming, when men will be more eager for wot'k, than they are for 'piny. "How to make both finds meet," is a problem which many business men in the immunity, are 1 now anxiously endeayonrjrjg to solve, in the teeth of a hostile Gownment. If aa Employers' Association «;oi(ld help to relieve the difficulties which, have to bo contended with, it wot# ( be a prudent thing to establish one. 1
