London, February 4i Tbo extension of the mail contritci with the colonies to 1898 has boon reluctantly left in the bands of the Postal Committee, who expect to obtain the Orient Company's consent to the compulsory calling at Colombo of their steamers both on the outward and homoward voyage, also the abolition of the special rates for tho parcel poHt. It ia unlikely that the other proposals of the Postal Conference, held in Wellington last year, will bo accepted at present. The Agents-General iutorviow the Postal Committee to-morrow.

(Rocoiyed February 6,11 a.m.) London, February 5. Sir J. Ponder has cablod to the Postal Conference that he docs not see why the Eastorn Extension Company should accept the conditions offered on the basis of ono ytMs agreementi and suggests that 9p term should bo longer.
