Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1895. CONSCIENCE OR VANITY?
The following exceedingly curious and unique announcement recently appeared in an Auckland journal, and no doubt the publication of it cost the advertiser a pretty penny ; I, llobert A. H. Eraser, hereby apologise for haying slandered Messrs Smith and Caughey, and all others, many in number. I feel that it is my duty to stale thus publicly that I was not always as truthful, careful and exact in my dealings with Messrs Smitlut Caughoy's customers as I knew I ought to have bcrn-both when I was employed in delivering parcels to customers, aud when I was engaged in travelling for orders for the same firm. That on several occasions I was guilty of searching the pockets of coats belonging to some of the employes of that firm with a view to stealing therefrom; I cannot say that I know all from whom I stole. The coats referred to were left hanging up whilst their owners were engaged in the shop. That some years ago, on one, if not on more than one occasion, J meanly stole some effervescing drink whilst the owners of tho shop were not present; said shop was at the foot of Groy-street: I know the owners, two men, are not there now, so I have to make the matter public. Should this meet their eyes I beg their forgiveness. That about ten years ago, when a boarder aud lodger at "His Lordship's Larder," Quecu-strcct, Auckland, I stole half-a crown (I think this was the amount) from a vest pocket while the owner lay asleep in bed. That on several occasions I wilfully broko some of the By daws of tho City of Auckland That I picked Boras in gardens (private) without asking the owners' permission to do so. That tho expenses for the supper and dance I gave at Omapere a few years ago were entirely defrayed from money out of which I had swindled Messrs Smith and Caughey. That my dealings when I sold fish at Omaperc were not always strictly honest. I herewith beg the pardon of ail I have deceived and wronged in any way, We should like to see some people occupying a more prominent position than Robert A. H. Eraser making a similar confession of thoir sins, The transgressions say of a legislator,or 6ay of aMinister of the Crown, would make a very pretty list, and would be more interesting reading than the recital \vd have republished. But is it conscience or vanitvwhichmakesmen parade their failings in this novel fashion ? We fancy it must be vanity, and that Mr Eraser is a proud man to have been able to show the world what a vile creature he has been, and what a virtuous person he has become. If it were only conscience, lie would merely make such reparation a 6 might bo within his power, to tho people ho had injured, and not have troubled the whole community with an open confession as to stealing some'fifervepcisgclrink, Jf jt be
conscience, and not vanity, we hope i the example will be contagious, and i that men generally will be aroused < —especially those who have evaded their liabilities towards newspapers. < There is a fine field in this direction, ; for mou of the Robert A, H. Fraser stamp.
