(From Our Own Correspondent). Monday. Mrs Beere received a tolegram from Wellington on Saturday to the effect that threo doctors had performed a successful operation on her husband's eye, in the Wellington Hospital. Largo volumes of smoke wero seen issuing from the western side of tho Tararua's on Saturday, from immense bush fires in the Otaki district. 1

The town was onveloped in smoke yesterday from bush fires. I hear that another baker intends starting here. I regret to state that Mr Hart Udy, junr., lost his youngest child on Saturday. It was bnried yester- j day.
