A CONTEMPTIBLE ACTION.
The following, from the Pahiatua fliraW, speaks for itself. Anything more mean could scarcely be conceived :—An act of gross vandalism has bejn perpetrated by some person or persons in Pahiatua. One of the prettiest spots of scenery in the vicinity of the town, is that area of native-owned bush just beyond the suspension bridge, on the Mangahao side of the Mangatainoka river. For quiet, natural beauty it is, or rather was, unsurpassed in the district, and its own attractions were added to by. an arm of the river, the clear, cool waters of which skirted the south- £ era limit of the bush and completed JB a scene of rare pastoral beauty. The '■ spot was a secluded one and a favorite bathing place for the residents of v Pahiatua, many of whom were in the habit of taking their children there and giving them a swim. The pretty path winding along the river bank was a favorite walk during fine afternoons. All this has now been changed through a disgraceful act pf wanton mischief. Some meanspirited individual has felled trees and shrubs across the footpath into the river, completely blocking the stream and the track, Not content with perpetrating this dirty trick, this destructive individual broko a number of glass bottles and threw the fragments into the stream. As a beauty spot the place is ruined, and for bathing it has been made too dangerous. Tho perpetrator of this dastardly act richly deserves tho severest punishment that can be meted out to him. (steps are being taken to discover his identity and kl havo him dealt with in the manner he deserves,
