ORDINARY MEETING. Tlib regular fortnightly meet-in; of the Masterton Borough Counci was held last evening. PresentHis Worship the Mayor, and Or Hefisey, Mulric, Cnllen, Wagp Chamberlain, E. Feist. Yates Hughes, and Hornblow. aixni's. Ibe minutes of the last meelinj were read and confirmed. RGRGESS LIST. Applications front (r. W. Wood rnofu, Thomas Knight, Janet Mo Guirc, and Ina Robertson, to liav their names placed on the Burges list, were granted. 'HIE WAII'OUA nitiucr.. &L A round robin, signed by cigh ™ u ratepayers, residents and contrac tors," with reference to the Wai poua Bridge, asking that investiga t-ion be made into the fact that tin ■ contract had been let without ten dors being culled, as the works wcr assuming such dimensions, tba those signing were of opinion tha ilic cost would be considerably ove the amount Boroughs and Countic are supposed to cxpeud without in yiting tenders, and, in their opinion tbo proceeding was not a fair one t tho public generally. The petitioi amoludcd by asking tbo Council ti sec, when called upon to pay its sbar of the cost of the repairs, that th Act bearing on this matter had bcei fully complied with. The Mayor said he thought if; pity the matter had not been ad dressed to the County Council, as th body controlling the work. Cr Feist thought that would b the proper course. Cr Hughes said they had to find portion of the money, and be though they should take some action. Cr Hessey moved that the matte *be referred to the Wairarapa Nort' .County Council. He might statt '"'however, he sympathised with tL petitioners. Cr Cullen said he would seconi this motion. Ho had taken a pre mincnt part in getting it up, bu thought the County should bavea opportunity of explaining its actioi in the matter. Tbo motion was then carried, (lAS MMl\ A petition was received fron Messrs Forman and Co., asking.tha a street lamp be erected in William street. Referred to the Gas Committee. THK NEW CIS TANK. It was resolved that the Borougl seal be affixed to the agreemen between Messrs Norburyand Trevo: and the Council, re tho new gas tank GAS KEfOKl'. The Gas and Library Commiltee'i report was read and adopted, jgf CLERK OP WOIiKS. ~ The Mayor stated that tho con tractor had started work, Tin Engineer had also suggested that i clerk of works be appointed. It wa> liisopinion thai they ought toappoim Ml' Betty as a practical man, Cr Cullen moved that Mr Bettj Ira appointed. Cr Wagg seconded the motion. I mended any particular person it i! would he better to appoint him. ij The Mayor said that Mr Fordo i bad merely said he could find a man ! for the Council if required. Mr Betty i had a coed deal of experience, and i (on the score of economy it would be wise to appoint him. Crs Hornblow and Cullen supported tho appointment of Mr Betty. The motion was then carried. nOARDIXfi BOUSKS. I C'rCullon said it was necessary i under Ihe By-law to inspect board- ' ing-houses. He did not think it was ■ 1 lie duty of Councillors, and therefore moved that the Inspector of Nuisances bo appointed to undertake | this work. The Mayoragrecd with Cr Cnllcn. In reply to Cr Hornblow the Clerk I explained that the wording of the jßy-law referred to all "common lodging houses." Cr Wagg pointed out that this must refer to all places of accommodation taking in casual lodgers. Finally it was resolved lo appoint Mr Ingram at a remuneration of 10s , for every licensed lodging house. I'lllilir-STItKIX
In reply to Cr Wagg, the Mayor said he had not yet been able to see Mrs Mclvenzio with reference to the widening of Perry-street. .VritKKT IVIDKXINii. The Mayor moved that the ten i feet between Church and Uaimistor- , streets, belonging to the Town Lands . | Trust, be applied for, for streetwidening purposes. Cr Hcssey seconded and the motion was carried. On the motion of Cr Cullen the i Council then adjourned.
