GREYTOWN NOTES
(from Our Own Correspondent). Friday. Early last Wednesday afternoon the Greytown Catholic Cemotery'j was reported to be on fire. Mr TV. Thompson (sexton) at once proceeded to the spot, and found the dry grass all ablaze. He,' with the assistance of the Borongh overseer (Mr Montgomery), fought the fiery elements with sticks and bushes for about four hours before they could extinguish the fire, but not until both men were completely exhausted. It i 6 feared that the ornamental trees in consequence of the scorching received, will perish. Had it not been for Messrs' Thompson and Montgomery, about £6o.worth of damago would have resulted, and they are to be highly commended for the way they worked. Itia thought that the fire was oaused through the carelessness of some boys who were shooting in the neighbourhood. !Tbe grass, in, this part of the town is very dry just; now, and had the flames spread unchecked there would'haye. aiubt. less been caused yen Serious loss damage.^ property. _: The-Maoris at Papawai are mak, liig great preparations for the forth, coining largo meeting o{ natives hew'."-' ' '
