Tiik leather-lunged Liberals of New Zealand, arc constantly ranting ibout the wonderful benefits to be lerivecl from the Advances to Settlers Act. Nothing can persuade them, thai they are entering upon a dangerous scheme, It is useless telling them, that the lending margin is too narrow for safety. They are indifferent to the fact, that the foundation of the scheme is entirely rotten. These are minor points easily overcome with Liberal bombast and frothy platform oratory. The. scheme opens-, up a bright prospect to an army of "right color" billet-hunters. There are revising, valuers of the calibre of Mr T. K. Mudonold, at £SOO per annum each, a whole army of local valuers, and invito a legion of lawyers to fatten on fees, A small bodyguard of ten or a dozen clerks for the superintendant and to fill these posts it is said each Minister has recommended more than twice the number required. Whatever the benefits of the Cheap Money Scheme might be to our farmers, there is no doubt it is to bo made a feather bed for for some of the more needy Liberals The entire credit, if any, with regard to State loans to farmers, cannot be claimed by ilia gushing Liberals of New \ Zealand, for the Commissioners of . Sayings Banks of Victoria have long , '"lid the power to make advances to' - and they have done so, loans armors . to about 70 farlaving been n. A mm ] mn „. nersthe amount a,. ■«%„,„•„., ng £SOO to each. The ~m m aethod is more commendable than he New Zealandscheme, for greater are is taken, the risk is less and the lillets are fewer. By the Victorian oheme advances can be made on reeholds only ; not more than half he value of the security is lent, and io loans are granted of less than 2200. Interest is charged at the ate of -5 per cent, payable lalf yearly, but 2 per .cent ler annum must also be paid as a inking fund on account of principal. i'efore a property is valued a valuaion fee of £2 10s (or £3 if the ecurity is more than 5 miles from a lailway Station) is required, and if he loan is granted a further charge s made for the mortgage deed of,
j three guineas for loans up to ,£SOO, ■ and four guineas for loans exceeding that amount. Only two valuators 1 are employed.
Our local contemporary notices, that the Mastcrfon agent of the Press Association has omitted to mention that at ittr Hogg's meeting on Friday evening an unanimous resolution of confidence in the present Ministry was carried, Now no resolution of confidence in the present Ministry was passed at Mr Hogg's meeting, and the Association message was perfectly correct. It is rather had form for a newspaper which makes uphalf itsissue out of Association messages without contributing a penny piece towards them, to be always casting reflections upon their accuracy, as if they were as unreliable as the Masterton specials to the Evening Post.
