THE HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION, THE COUNCIL FAVORS THURSDAY.

At last night's meeting of the Mastei'ton Borough Council, apctition was presented, signed by sevoral leading business men, asking the Council to call a public meeting to obtain an expression of opinion, as to which would be the most suitable day to fix upon for the compulsory halfholiday, A petition was also presented, largely signed, asking that Thursday be lixed upon as the day, Cr Feist moved that a public meetbe held, He thought it pretty well agreed upon, that Thursday would lie the best day. But, at the same time a public meeting would do no barm, and would satisfy tho petitioners.

Cr Culleu seconded the motion. He thought those affected should have an opportunity of expressing an opinion.

The Mayor was of opinion that the meeting would be merely waste of time. He was assured that the general feeling was that closing on Saturday would be an injustice to the general public. The tradesmen did not want a holiday at nil, but if they must have it the general feeling was against Saturday. It might, be an act of courtesy to call a public I meeting, as asked, but he did not! see the nse of it, Personally lie was in favor of Thursday. Cr Hessey said some people would sign any petition presented to them. He did not think Saturday would be a good day to close.

Or Hughes said Saturday would never do, us butchers, fishmongers and fruiterers would keep open, and it would be a half-an-half arrangement.

The motion was then put and lost Crs Cullen, Wagg and Feist voting for it, and the Mayor, Crs Hughes, Hessey and Mutrie against. The Mayor said the petition re appointing Thursday would not need ito be dealt with, as he intended to give notice of motion that Thursday; bo the day fixed upon, in accordance with the Act.

At a later stage His Worskip gave notice as lie had indicated.
