(Received Jan. 11,10.35 a.m.) London, Jan. 10. , The majority of shareholders in jjjhe N.Z, and River Plate Land and Company voted in favor of the appointmentof an independent auditor, and abolishing the office of Managing Director. Mr H. J. Bristow, one of the Directors, demanded a poll,, whereupon the bulk of the shareholders left the room before the business was finished, declaring that the Directors would force a largo majority by the means of proxies held by them. Fearing that thoy might catch fire themselves, thepassengers compelled the captain to proceed on his way under pain of being shot. A Shocking Accident. Melbourne, Jan 10. A shocking accident occurred on the railway line at Jolimont. Two gangers engaged in repairing the line were struck by a passing train. One man named Smith had his head cut off and hurled many yards away. The other, O'Halloran, was mangled beyond recognition, Cable Question, (Received Jan. 11,10.10 a.m.) Sydney, Jan. 11, Tho ffcraW affirms that the cable route from Canada to Sydney da Fanning Islands, though more expensive, would be the best to meet the requirements of the larger colonies in Australia. The Times and Daily News refer with gratification to the goodwill expressed towards Great Britain in President Cleveland's message to Congress re the Pacific cable. An Indian Ruler Murdered (Received Jan, 11, 10.35 a,m.) Calcutta, Jan. 10. The Mehtar of Chitral has been murdered by his brother, who has seized the throne. Rabbits for the London Market Sydney, January 10. The Agent-General cables that there is a good demand for rabbits in London. He adds that they , must be trapped—not shot—clean paunched and well packed. Portions of the blocking eleven i years old were examined, both the ■ material and the moisture found underneath, being placed under a ' searching analysis, but no pathogenic germs wero found, and a special search revealed not the ] slightest trace of typhoid bacillus. Sydxey, January 11. The claimant to the Rand estate in the person of the alleged son of the deceased, has based his claim on the contention that the deceased married in England, but the administrators assert that they possess proof that Rand left England when he was twelve years old, and never went back. The estate which is worth about a quarter of a million is beingadministeredby the brothers of the deceased, Iwcom. The result of the ballot of miners, so far is against a strike. A trial shipment of hay, walnuts, and wine has reached here direct from Valparaiso, Hodart, Jan, 11, The idea of holding a conference of the Chambers of Commerce in Hobart has been abandoned, but the local Chamber will hold a special meeting to discussthe question of the free enterchange of nataral products of the colonies, This meeting will bo held prior to the meeting of the Premiers already arranged, and the result will no doubt be specially communicated to the latter. The most complete coining plant ever discovered here has been unearthed at Waterloo, For some time past a large quantity of spurious coins, representing all values from a shilling to a sovereign have been in circulation, and the counterfeit is of such excellent workmanship as to almost deceive an expert. A man named Biroh, after a desperate struggle, has been arrested on a charge of being concerned in the affair, Admiral Bridge has assumed command of the Australian fleet, and Admiral Bowden-Smith sails for England on Monday. Sir G. R. Dibbs, in tho course of a speech advised the creation of a Vice-Admiral's station in Australia, The Canadian Steamship Co. is considering the proposal of the New Zealand Government regarding that colony joining the Vancouver Mail service, but some time must elapse before a decision can be come to owing to Mr Huddart's absence in England. Hobabt, January 11. The Treasurer hopes to effeota saving of £30,000 on the Estimates already sanctioned by Parliament.
