Australian Politics.

" Victoria Financially Dead." 1 [Received January 5,11 a,m.] Melbourne, January 5. In the Legislative Council another batch of petitions was presented against the Land and Income Tax Bill. The debate was continued by Mr Wynne, who criticised the measure adversely, urging that by depreciating the land they would ruin the farming class. His personal observation when attending the Postal Conference in New Zealand last March convinced him that New Zealand ,-under this Act was worse off than AVictoria. Up* Mr Fraser said that while he was fully convinced of the difficulties in l which the Government wero placed lie was reluctantly compelled to oppose the Bill. Victoria was financially dead, and peoplo who had money to invest did not know where t to place it. He had offered trust funds to the Treasurer of New South Walos but he was full of money. He strongly objected to the protectionist wall placed round Victoria and adTocated. that encouragement should be given to Americans who wanted to open up a great meat trade with Australia. Offing to the hostile attitude of the Council towards tho Bill a meetin" of the Cabinet was hastily convened, but no course of action is to be decided upon until the Council has dealt with tho measure. It is believed that if the Upper Chamber rejects it, Parliament will be prorogued and immediately it is Ire-asßembledj the Bill will be again introduced.
