THE MANAWATU RAILWAY.

It is staled that the Government intend to purchase the Manawatu Railway, Under the contract between the Manawatu Railway Company and the Government, the latter now have the right to purchnso the line and everything connected with it on giving twelve month's notice. The price is to be ascertained by arbitrators in the usual way. They have to be guided by the cost of the construction of similar lines at the time the railway was built, and an allowance for depreciation is provided for, and to the sum thus fixed, live per cent has to be added, All endowments are outside the contract, and if the Government desire to take them too, special arrangements must be made. Tho Company still holds over 100,000 acres of land, including the valuable reclamation at the station, part of which only goes with the buildings.
