MR C. E. DANIELL.
A Mark of Esteem. k very strong evidence of the I kindly relations existing between Mr jOk Danicll and his employes waß given yesterday at a gathering held in his honor at Potirau, and the opening of the New Yoar taken advantage of as a suitable time to | give expression ti the high estimate of his fair and honourable dealings, and the principles which govern his business relations. Yesterday morning about the usual hour of opening for business, somo curiosity was excited by the number of people in holiday attire in front of Mr Daniell's premises, chiefly Mr Daniell's employes and their wives and families. It soon became evident that the congregation was on pleasure bent. Enquiry discovered that a picnic had been arranged by Mr Daniell's employes which he had oonsentcd to attend. The party (about 120 in all) was soon conveyed in drags and busses to Mr David Donald's Potirau property, and a good time was spent, although the rain in the afternoon, cut short outdoor games and amußements. Plenty of shelter was, however, provided by the buildings on the ground. The most important event of tho day was the presentation of the following address to Mr Danicll, by Mr A. Robertson, on behalf of his fellow employes:—
To Chaeles Edwabd Danieil, Esq., General Contractor, Mnstorton. From his Employes. i Sis,—Wc desiro to express our appreciation of your sterling worth as an employer by asking you to accept this token of our respect. It has been with feelings of deepest sympathy that we have noted the many heavy losses and discouragements you have sustained during your business career, together with the severe illness from which you have now satisfactorily recovered. We are pleased lo see you moving in and out amongst us as formerly, performing your responsibilities towards us in a way seldom met with. i We unite in wishing you long continued bodily health and business prosperity,' combined with all the honours and joys of social and domestic circles, (Signed by 20 workmen), The address handsomely framod, aud illuminated by Mr Palmer artist at the establishment of Mr 0. P. Corlett, successor to Messrs Bock & Co., Wellington) is a very fine production. Mr Robertson, in making the presentation, made a speech of considerable length, in which he suitably alluded to the regard and estimation in which all held Mr Danicll, who was visibly affected at the unexpected honor done hint, and feelingly replied. Mr R. Burton aud others also spoke and after more cheers, games aud pastimes were again indulged in.
