y& By Telegraph—Own Correspondent. Pahiatua, Wednesday. Yesterday the Pahiatua cricket team defeated tho Waiwetu team by 22 runs on the first innings. New Year's day passed off quietly here, the cricket match being; the only event of interest in town. A great many people visited Woodville races. Heavy rain fell in tho afternoon, greatly to relief of farmers, who were beginuing to feel the effects of the long spell of dry weather.
