D.Watson; Sec: MrWm.Sellar. The annual gatheriugof the above Society was held yesterday under the most favourable auspices. Fino weather prevailed, and the attendance was a record one, besides which tho entries were up to expec- ( tiition. The ground for several of c fS tbe events was perhaps a trifle hard, * but could be excused as preferable : t( 'tlio usual sloppy state of the Oval on many former occasions. The various events were keenly contested. 1 lie handicaps carried fairly good Jjchls, and the wins were mostly ,•miliar. The points prize was won '*% Carlson, of Dnnevirkc, with jive firsts, he having succeeded in annexing the Maiden Race, Hi S'i Jump, Wrestling (two styles) and Putting the Stone. Carlson is evidently an athlete who will make his mark yet, being quite ft young man. The Cumberland Wrestling brought out a field of six, amongst thorn' a Native. Bagpipe 1 Music and Dancing did not bring ' out so many competitors as might ' have been expected, but the dancing was particularly good, the talented * and popular Smith family being much admired. Mr R, Smith senr.,tbough not now a competitors always ready to fill a blank and further the interests of sports generally. Although on the ground Hempton did not compete in the amateur events. The greatest amount of interest centred in the SawingandTree-fellingevents, * the latter certainly being a novelty here, although largely practised in several of the sister Colonies.

Exactly at two o'clock these events itorted with the two men Maiden jpras; Competitioner which seven •faira competed, and was won by Smith and Ritchfield in 42 2-5 sees, Petersen am' Dew being second with ■l2j sees. The Champion Two Men Sawing Competition was again won by the Harding Bros, in 3GJ sees, Sykes and Peterson being second with 38 sees. The Tree-felling contest was competed for by seven axemen, and was a gift to McNale in 3miu 6sec, Smith (the second man) being three-quarters of a minute behind. Smith, however, was successful in annexing tho prize for Hewing. A number of races were held at intervals for boys and girls,in which there were large fields nnd keen competition, and a bun competition for boys was very amusing. The stewards attended to their several duties, and the various events were got well off to time. Mr W. Sellar, the energetic Secretary, was kept busy attending to tho numberless duties' that devolve on ti. In spite of this, Mr Sellar, and (assistant, Mr Millar, were always dy to give every assistance and information. Mr Dennis, of the Royal Hotel, did a good business in the publican's booth, and Mrs Rayner, who had the refreshment booth, was kept busy throughout the day. Mrs Raynor also provided an excellent lunch for the stewards. Fruit and fancy goods were dispensed by Mrs Scorer. The Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade Band discoursed pleasant music on the ground. The following are tho results of the various events : Maiden Race, 220 yds, S. A.
