TENUI NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Saturday.
Tenui will be m fek on New Year's Day as the Sports Committee i have arranged au excellent programme. All the events are local for the first time; whether such'"a course is a judicious one remains to be seen. One wonld hardly think it is, as the tradesmen of Masterton baye .generally contributed some prizes for the open events, a step in the right direction, seeing that competitors hailed from Masterton as well as Tenui, and the donors as a matter of business would kill two birds with one stone. It is a pity no consideration was entertained for the amateurs, of whom there • is a fair sprinkling in the district, The Owens, Skeefc, Grant, Brookes, Johnston and A. Speedy are therefore debarred from participating. They are all athletes of no mean calibre, and patrons of truesport would have seen something, for their subscriptions. Perhaps it is not too late for the Committee, who are doing their best to make the gatheriug a success, to arrange two or three events even at the eleventh hour. The jumps are handicap ones this time, a new departure. Hitherto they liavo fallen an easy prey to Fred Nicholls. A new feature, and one of not. the least important, will be the May Pole Dance, under the supervision of Mr R. P, Johnson, who is assiduously training some children for the occasion,
It is to be hoped that the gathering will not be marred by the unseemly conduct of a few topers who make it a practice to indulge in rough horseplay on such occasions, Why it is allowed at up-country meetings, when it would- not be tolerated in towns one cannot understand. Last year two or three ignorant and foul-mouthed fellows broke loose and used language most disgusting, to express their approval or disapproval of the way in which competitors ran.
No doubt there would be a greater assembly of spectators if they could be assured nothing unseemly would occur. <
There will be nosporta at Whakataki this year, as Mr Stewart, who was always to the front, is leaving the district. Howover, Grassemlalo about six miles north of Tenui, has determined to.come to the rescue, and a good programme of sports has been arranged for Boxing Day. They should be well patronised. It would pay tho Livery Stable at Tinui to run a brake to Grassendale on that day, at a cheap rate. Mr Webb, Rabbit Inspector, met with a nasty spill at Whakataki, the other day. His horse pitched him on his shoulder, which is much contused.
Mr Neil O'Canehadthemisfortune to break his'thumb whilst handling ahorse,
One of the most curious cases connected with children that I have met with, in a varied experience of of twenty years with juveniles, lias happened in this district, to Mr Hancock's infant boy, who is only four months old. About Oct. 13th last, by some means the baby's sister, during the temporary absence of the nurse, gave him a great quantity of ordinary kidney, beans to eat, which had been purchased foi - seed. Since Nov, 3rd the little 'sufferer Ims excreted no fewer than thirty-eight whole beans and several little pieces. How lie has lived is a miracle! Dr, Dawson, has been attending the case, and the little one is now improving rapidly, Tennis .is becoming very popular in this district. Mr Elder, Langdale, has a capital court, and has arranged a match with a Masterton team, Mr Johnston, llataikima, has had an excellent court made, and, at Akiteo Mr Armstrong has a team, siuglo or double, of really first-class players, A good match could, no doubt,be arranged with Masterton.
Cricketers have not made any signs of playing yet. There is always a difficulty in getting players together until after shearing. Now that most stations have " out out" ' there is no reason why play should not commence. Last year our players did very well against Greytown and Mastorton', and a better stand could ', be made this season if players would practice. Joplin, one of the best bowlers in the district, has been under medical treatment, and thinks he cannot play again. It appears that about ten years ago, when head masterof the Petoiio , school, and playing for his Club, ho was struck on the ear by the cricket ball, and never experienced auy ! inconvenience from- tko blow until lately. Serious complications developed, even after a lapse of such a long period, and Dr Dawson was called in, under'whose treatment he is getting better. There aro some good players in the district, and they have expressed thoir desire to play. Perhaps last year's Secretory will call a meeting at an early date. Travellers using tho bye-road from the Junction to Mataikuna can do so now without running the risk of being tossed by the mad bullock from one side of tho road to the other, or up the hill and down the gully. The savage animal was in charge of tho road for some time, during which it attacked several people, whether on foot, horseback, or in buggies, One unfortunate swagger, who had justpassed through Mr Mils' gato, was knocked down by it and narrowly escaped being gored, is it was, his face and side was severely bruised. Thoownor, whoever he was, mi?nt. have compensated the. sufferer. Messrs Bellis and Foreman, after some trouble, succeeded in shooting it. The following pupils passed at the recent drawing examination: Scale; W. Owen, good, J. Schofield. Geometry: W, Owen, excellent, J. Schofield, good. Freehand: W. Owen, Emily Wickstead, J, Collerton, and E. Schofield.
