Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1894. RABBITS IN THE DISTRICT COURT.

Tub action of tho Inspectors in the caee.of tlio Rev. J. 0. Andrew lias been spoken of as that of mandatory officialism. as opposed' to common sense. No one has a more kindly feeling and a higher respect for the llov J. C. Andrew than ourselves, yet we are bound to admit that on the rabbit question he has, iu our opinion, beenin the wrong and the Inspectors in the right. What are the siniple facts of the rabbit'plagueon the lea estate ? Foryears past it has been infested with the pest to such an extent that the; feeding capacity of the run has been impaired, and an obstacle has been placed in tlio way of adjacent properties being cleaned, It is true that Mr Andrew has always been fighting tho rabbits, but lie .has not gono as far in his'warfare 1 against tlio pest as to satisfy the Inspectors or the department, The Inspectors are experts and they are men who may be credited with possessing a little common seiise.-' Indeed, an Inspector who carried out an arbitrary' Act. in au arbitrary manner would not last long in any district. There is ho personal feeling or prejudice on their part against'Mr Andrew, for that gentleman is the last person iu the world to inspire such a sentiment'. One Inspector after another lias found it necessary to prosecute Mr Andrew,'ajid the latter has displayed perhaps mbitlngeiiuity'aud' skill in protecting himself from the department tli'aii lio has in protecting himself from the pest. "-"It hiiircomo to thispass that Ica- : sta, tion;must be cleaned; or th'e Rabbit Act is unworkable.
