(Received Dec. 14,10.45 a.m.) Shanghai, December 13, The Japanese who landed between Taku and Shanhaikwan, are believed to be advancing on Pekin. (Received Dec. 14, la,m.) Shanghai, December 13. The Japanese have occupied Foochow practically without bloodshed, their attack being unopposed by the Chinese who are retreating to NiuUhwang. The garrison of Weibaiwai has aunounced that they will desert if attacked. It is reported that the Japanese divisions have landed on the shores of the Gulf of Pechili, and have taken up a position near Taku. Latent Australian. In the Legislative Assembly, the Colonial Treasurer stated that the Government would not contribute towards the defence of Thursday Island until the Queensland Government agreed to assist in defraying the cost of protecting Port Darwin cables. In Committee, on the Land and Income Tax Bill, a proposal was made that the £SOO exomption ihould apply to mortgagees as well is owners. The Premier agreed that in mortgages up to £I,OOO the £SOO should be deducted, and this was carried. In tho section providing for an income tax, tho Premier moved that the tax on income derived from property be doubled as follows: 8d in the £ up to £1,200, Is in the £ up to £2,200, ls4din the £ over that amount.
