A DESPONDENT SETTLER.

Aucki-anb, Monday.
A man named Potter, who lived near Ngaruawahia.attcmpted suicide i on Saturday. A house was found on ; fire, and on it being broken into, he was inside, with a cut on his throat, indicted by means of a sheath knifo. Potter is now in the HamiltonHospilal. The wound is not a deep one, but the man's face iB badly burned, and he appears to have inhaled a great deal of smoke, The men who made the rescue say that wheu they attempted to enter the houso Potter barred the door, and they bad to force thoir way in. Potter was a cabinetmaker by trade,andhehad several articles, of furniture almost finished in the house when it was burnt. There was no insurance. Potter has always been considered un eccentric character, living alone iu ft bush clearing, but it is believed lie W a wife and family in England, When asked by a constable why he attempted to destroy himsolf,he said,' " Becaflso everybody had a down on him,"'"' ■!
