Masterton v. Carterton,

The Mastorton elovon played thirteen of Carterton, at the latter place on Saturday, and a very interesting and exciting match resulted in a win for Carterton by tho narrow majority of three runs. Carterton went first to the wickets, and succeeded in running up 77 runs, Baillie 17, Beecliy 13, Eaglo 12, and Acheson 11, being the top scores. Broad's bowling was very fatal, and ho secured nine wickets for 29 runs. bowling was, however, weaWnd runs were made rather easily.' The grass was in a slippery condition, and the fielding of both teams was not of the best. Masterton then went in and totted up 74 before they were disposed of. Cotterill with 27 played a pretty innings, and was run out when iu full form. Dowser 12, and Skinner 14, were the only others to make a stand, the bowling of Beechy and Baillie being 100 much for tho majority. The following were the scores

The only time tho members of the team handle the bat or ball is in matches, and | reverses can onlj be expected. The form displayed again Carterton on Saturday was good, and some splendid play, both in bowling and batting was shown. With the help of the absentees, Hanson and Fordo, the result of the game should have been different.

Tho bowling of Broad on Saturday was splendid, and he is improving fast. His record of nine wickets for 29 runs will be an average hard to boat (bring the season,, The same pMjliad luck turn against him when 1 batting, hitting his wicket when he had every appearance of making an excellent stand.

A surprise was in store for Masterton when Cotterill was urged upon to fill a vacancy in the team. His batting was indeed a marvel, and I doubt if a prettier bat is at present in the district, For his 27 lie gave not a single chance, batting cleanly and with science, when he had tho misfortune to be runout by Skinner, who appeared too anxious to make rnns, Although Cotterill has been stationed in Masterton all tho season his services have never been sought after, although it now appeal's he flayed for two years for the Napier Seniors, and was considered ono of the most proficient batsmen in the Club. He should provo a considerable help to Masterton at the present stage.

Masterton play Matarawa next Saturday, and although tho latter have fifteen men, the match should be an interesting one. Greytown only just averted a defeat by the Bametearaa week ago, and Masterton will have to procure a good team to make a staud against thom,

In the Wellington-Canterbury match Canterbury won by nine wickets,
