TitK result of the Mayoral election 'was all that.wo had wished, and ii little more than we had expected. Mr Pownall's supporters were a little more numerous than wo bad calculated, and we are very pleased that they proved to be so. His poll on this occasion, and tho manner in which be^.-..conducted/ liis -"election point him "pittas MuHeron's.siiccessoi\ tiiidna the riglit, man:to initiate a'policy' of .progress jnihb town. We l|liove,-however, in Mr' Heron hav iilgpis of putting the Gas Works straight beforo, severing hifi -couheptibu'with'tho' Mayoral chair, and, more than this, we have confidence in his making good use of liis opportunity. In November next we expect there will bo.no, gas. diiculty, and wo will hope then to see Mr Pownnll como forward with a proposal for water and drainage, Latterly tho 'gas works have been used as a bogie to scare people from water and drainage, but wo, at any rate, do not jntond to share the Senseless alarm which has been manifested.
