Deptford Dock Yard.

[To ran Editok W.D. Timrs.]

Draii Siu.—A friend of mine lins sent me a ropy of (lie WairarapaDili.v Timhs, of the Bth i'usl. in which I find a reference to a letter written by Mr St. Clair Linrdct contradicting a statement I made in the" Keening Pms " of tho 3i)thult, ic representee of the Evelyn family. I regret very much that Mr Liardet should have done this and also that he should state that his father was heir to the Baronetcy in tho family. Mr [j'limlet's family joined (bit of tho Evelyn's by a second marriage, his grandfather having married the widow (nccPhilippa Evelyn) of Major Houghton (by whom issue was left) she being second daughter, whereas my grandfather married the eldest daughter (nee Susanna Evelyn) and oil the brothers (ir John and Sir Hugh, etc.,) dying without issue, my father became heir, and as his eldest son I represent that branch of the Evelyn family descended from John Evelyn, sumamed Sylva, consequently there nro two families that come before Mr Liardet's and no will that his father could have made would alter the lineage. I am exceedingly sorry that Mr Liardet should have contradicted my statement and can only infer that he has done so through not having had the family pedigree heforo him. For the satisfaction of my many relatives and friends in the Colony and the vindication of my own honor, I am bound to make this matter public. Trusting that you will kindly find space in your well-known journal for this letter.

I I remain Bear Sir Yours very faithfully, Sydney Evelyk Wkioiit, P.B.—Any person who is interested in this case can see a copy of tho family pedigree in vol, 2 of Evelyn's Diary published by Henry Colburn, London, 1817. Hope Lodge, South Avenue, Hopper street Wellington, 17th November. 1891.
